I’m a writer, editor, content creator, and dual citizen, navigating my new life as an immigrant entrepreneur in northern Italy. The path to get here took more than two decades, with many twists and turns along the way.
After growing up in a suburb of San Diego, California, my first big move was going to college at Stanford University, where I graduated with a B.A. in English Literature four years later. In the summer before my senior year, I received a grant from Stanford to pursue a creative writing project based on my Italian family history. The grant funded my first solo trip to Italy, where I formed a deep connection with the country my grandmother had left to pursue her own American dream.
That summer in Italy, I promised myself I’d return to live there one day—but I had no idea how or when I could make it happen. After more than 20 years, several half-finished novels, a brief career as a professional gambler , decades of struggling with a misdiagnosed chronic illness, and finally finding the right balance between work and creative life, COVID-19 came along and turned my world upside down again.
This time, instead of focusing on what I wanted to do, I couldn’t stop thinking about where I wanted to be. The prospect of starting over from scratch in my 40s was daunting, but it made me realize that there would never be a “perfect time” to pursue my dream of living in Italy. If you wait until your life is exactly the way you want it before going after what you want, you could be waiting forever.
